Chapter Three

Michelle and Jennifer kept on seeing the ghostly figure’s face all day during school. It seemed almost impossible to concentrate on their studies in their classes.

“I saw a ghost!” said Michelle, at lunch with her friends.

“Is that why you have been daydreaming during classes?” replied Heather, who seemed to chuckle a bit.

“Yeah, but you don’t understand? The ghost was in my backyard!” said Michelle.

“Yeah, right, you did not see a ghost in your backyard! I mean, who died in your backyard -- Napoleon?” said Shannon, laughing.

“Napoleon died in the island of St. Helen by an overzealous treatment, so stop teasing me about what I saw! And if you want to see the ghost, come by my house after school and I will show you,” said Michelle.

“Fine, but you better be telling the truth or -- or I will tell everybody about your lie in the school paper,” replied Heather.

“You’re joking! You would never do that!” said Michelle.

“Maybe I would, maybe I wouldn’t,” replied Heather.

“Well, just come by my house after school, and I will show you that I am not lying,” said Michelle.

“Okay, see you after school,” replied Heather and Shannon. The lunch bell rang after she said that.

When the school bell rang at 3:00 P.M., all the students went home to do their homework, but Michelle and her friends were trying to seek the ghost that had appeared to Michelle the night before.

“So, where is the ghost?” asked Shannon, as they were climbing the ladder towards the clubhouse.

“I saw him right near the door, so we should see him when we reach the top of the ladder,” answered Michelle.

“What are you doing?” asked Jennifer, as she ran towards the clubhouse.

“We’re -- we’re looking for Heather’s lost wallet,” replied Michelle.

“Can I help?” asked Jennifer.

“No because I know you would find it and hide it under your bed!” replied Michelle.

“When have I ever done that?” said Jennifer.

“Oh, three weeks ago with my wallet, my hair brush, and my clothes,” said Michelle, with a matter-of-fact tone.

“Well, you steal my things, too!” replied Jennifer.

“Okay, can we please get back to the search,” interrupted Heather.

When they reached the top of the clubhouse, Heather, Michelle, and Shannon saw nothing. However, they all could feel a sudden breeze as they stepped onto the clubhouse floor.

“Well, it doesn’t seem to be here, Michelle,” said Heather, knowing that Jennifer was still there.

“Well, I thought I did see it here, but maybe it fled somewhere,” replied Michelle.

“Wallets can’t fly!” exclaimed Jennifer.

“I know that! I was just -- just kidding, that’s all,” said Michelle, “Maybe you should go inside because it is starting to get cold,”

“No it isn’t,” replied Jennifer.

“Well, just go inside anyway because we have to talk about something,” said Shannon.

Jennifer went inside and Michelle began to plead to Heather to not tell her lie to the entire school body.

“Well,” said Heather, “you have to take a picture of the ghost and bring it into school tomorrow or I will certainly assume that you are lying,” said Heather.

“I am not lying!” replied Michelle.

“Well, then, bring in the photo tomorrow if you are not lying,” said Heather.

“Fine, see you tomorrow!” said Michelle, as she waved to her as Heather went into her parent’s car.

Michelle was very uneasy about the bet, but she did not want to suffer the humiliation of her so-called lie to be in the newspaper.
